Jimmy Bain Dio and Rainbow bass player is a solid line player though not just that. The low notes he plays are highly densed and are a great part of the heaviness of Rainbow and Dio two of seminal metal bands IMHO.

Matt Bissonete is another incredible musician who is remined as a simple root note player, though if you do hear the lines on the Satriani Extremist and the live part of Time Machine you will hear a talented jazz player playing rock as it should be played. Doubt of that and I will consider you ignorant in bass.

Tony Franklin is an exceptional bass player that played with Derek Sherinian and many others.

These three are hardly mentioned but in my not so humble opinion they are very important musicians and a tremendous inspiration for bass players.
